Hate in The Mountain State? Perish the thought! Since many of you didn't read my diary from yesterday, I thought it would be wise to bring some more light into the picture.
Two GLBT-related stories out of West Virginia are starting to make some national and internet press. The first is a story from WSAZ-TV entitled "Mother: Gay Son Suffered Brutal Harassment at Camp"
The second is a story from the Charleston Gazette entitled "'Sexual orientation' removed from Kanawha schools policy"
Instead of rehashing the stories, I'd rather you see how conservative "Christians" express their "love" on the accompanying message boards. Maybe then, the DKos Community will realize the necessity of HR 2262 --- The Safe Schools Improvement Act of 2009.

I will take every step to teach my children to hate such wretchedness.

It's a HUMAN fact and not appropriate to mix kids of the opposite sex (or, in this case, the same sex if they are attracted to that sex).

I would not send my sons to a camp where they would stay in a room with girls, so why should I sand them with gay boys?
Posted by: who cares on Jul 20, 2009 at 10:40 AM
If a gay kid goes to camp with other younger boys and kids, those other kids have a right not to be around someone who is gay,That is why they seperate the boys from the girls. And gay individuals should be treated differently if they are in that setting with other kids, where they would have to change and shower together.

Outside influences can have an affect on ones sexual preferences, however, it is ultimately a decision MADE by the person.
Had enough yet? It gets better.

It is not and if he was ever in a situation with school or any other activity where he had a homosexual instructor whether they were male or female, I would have no choice but to remove him from that situation...

It's obvious from his post that he is confused and depressed. He needs some attention and will get it anyway he can, including saying he is gay, and is constantly being picked on.

If you know he like boys, then you should not have sent him to camp with other boys, do you think that other kids would want to shower and change clothes with someone who is gay, you have to remember at camp there are even younger kids. They should not be around someone who is attracted to other boys.

What I am saying is I don't want to know if you are "gay". Quit advertising it and quit expecting special treatment! And whether anyone likes it or not, our country was founded "under God" and He is still in charge. I do not hate gays or anyone else. I just will not support special treatment.

How is it appropriate to put someone who is attracted, sexually, to the same sex in a room full of kids that meet that criteria? Why should they have to bathe, go to the bathroom, sleep and change clothes around someone who could be sexually attracted to them?
Posted by: who cares on Jul 19, 2009 at 02:36 PM
if you son is gay he shouldnt be at the camp with other boys at a young age anyway, because he is gay, the other younger boys shouldnt be around it, if i had my son there I would take him out and not let him back in. Send your son to a camp and get him back on track.

You need to deal with your kids and teach them early that being gay is wrong and make them hate being gay.
It goes on, and on, and on. To be fair, there are also dozens of comments from people who behave civilly.
Even though the West Virginia Legislature is a 2/3+ majority in BOTH Houses, and even though the West Virginia Senate has TWICE adopted employment and non-discrimination laws, no such law exists. The Kanawha County Board of Education decides that it will only recognize classes required by federal or state law. So let's do it.

We have to overcome at least a 10 Democrat deficit because the following Democratic Members will probably vote against this bill anyway: Melancon (LA), Shuler (NC), Tanner (TN), Taylor (MS), Berry (AR), Boren (OK), Price (VA), Bright (AL), Davis (TN), and Donnelly (IN). That's why I have so many Republicans in the table.
Now let's get to work!
