BREAKING! CBS News Reports that the Bush administration considered using troops in U.S.
Now breaking on MSNBC Site:
The Bush administration in 2002 considered sending U.S. troops into a Buffalo, N.Y., suburb to arrest a group of terror suspects in what would have been a nearly unprecedented use of military power, The New York Times reported.
The story goes on to state that Cheney argued strongly for the use of the military to apprehend the New York terrorists who were accused of plotting with Al Qaida.
Had Bush actually carried through with this illegal and wholly unconstitutional scheme it would have marked the first time since the Civil War a president has used the American Military as law enforcement within the United States.
Further Bush aides were arguing (apparently along with Cheney) that an Oct 23rd 2001 memo from the Justice Department gave them broad powers to dispatch U.S. troops into the streets on the grounds of national security.
While the media and the Republicans make a mountain out of a molehill regarding the Gates arrest and hours of news time has been devoted to this sideshow, once again Dick Cheney and Bush are given a pass and allowed to defecate on the constitution and the inalienable rights of American citizens not to be harassed by our military. Admittedly, the dynamic duo failed to actually carry out their scheme to roll out the troops in the streets of America, however it is yet another in a string of illegal abuses of power of an administration that showed nothing but contempt for American values and rule of law.
