Are the GOPers about to overplay their hand?

House to consider resolution demanding Obama apologize to Crowley
@ 10:39 pm by Michael O'Brien
Congress would demand that President Obama apologize to the officer the president said had "acted stupidly" in the arrest of a prominent Harvard professor under a resolution set to be introduced by one Michigan lawmaker.
Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) will introduce a House resolution on Monday demanding Obama retract and apologize for remarks he has made about Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley this past week.

I think most Americans would agree, no matter how they feel about his original "stupidly" comment, that President Obama had made whatever amends were needed by the end of last week. Certainly Officer Crowley did.
So, what would the GOPers gain if they go down this road? Of course they will keep the "birthers" and Fox News crowd happy, but are they giving the president a bat that he will be able to use to beat them over the head with? Can President Obama now say that the GOP is doing everything they can to distract the nation from the very important health care reform debate that is taking place?
Are the GOPers about to overplay their hand? Will this be the GOP play that finally unites Democrats fully behind our president? Will the GOP (again) show America what they are really all about?
Update: Perhaps Reid and Pelosi should demand the apology resolution be taken up in both houses of Congress immediately and that both the House and Senate should work through August to resolve the issue. While they are at it they can work on health care. We'll see how serious the GOP is about getting health care reform done.
