Jeff Sharlet's book, The Family, has made a splash like an asteroid landing on the Potomac, which is probably the only thing in our solar system with the mojo to GAME OVER the Christian Mafia, as they call themselves My copy has not arrived yet, but I'm already having to up my Rolaids consumption anticipating the dyspepsia from what I've seen of Sharlet's story on the teevee. The Oregonian in me was heartbroken to read this:
As a sophomore enrolled at Willamette University in Oregon, the Fellowship's eventual leader, Douglas Coe approached then-political science professor and dean of students Mark Hatfield, in order to ask for permission to start a chapter of an evangelical student association.
When I moved to Oregon in the mid-80s, everyone told me that Oregonians vote for the person, not the party. But that was in the days before Hatfield's party turned into Stepford Republicans. Republicans still had some credibility--back then. It's hard for me to imagine Mark Hatfield condoning the monster that Doug Coe's vision transmogrified into.
The video footage of Tom Price (R-GA) running--no, RACING--to get away from HuffPo/Firedog reporter Mike "The Stalker" Stark armed with a videocam is, well, priceless. All to avoid having to respond to Stark's question about whether Price supports the Birther's claim that President Obama was not born in Hawaii, as most reality-based Americans concluded long ago.
What if Kossacks and other bloggers took a page out of Mike Stark's playbook: "stalking" those Representatives and Senators stumping at home over recess who have being identified as members of The Family/Fellowship, and asking them if they REALLY agree with ________________ [insert outrageous Doug Coe claim], and videorecord the response. For an organization that prides itself on flying below the radar, let's show 'em how what it feels like to have their shadow government-in-waiting exposed for the demonic activity it is.
Shine a little light on the cockroaches and watch them scurry for cover, protesting how they've been misunderstood and are being unfairly picked on. Look around you. Haven't these zealots done enough to prove their true colors. Our nightmare is their wet dream.
