So dude, Mr. President, Senior Abbas, what do you really think about Hamas?.... No seriously.....
(Abbas) called the organization princes of darkness who divide the homeland and the nation, and who damage democracy by preventing Fatah members from participating in the congress."

So that's about the harshest rhetoric one can utilize and Abbas chose to use it at the first Fatah convention in 20 years. That's very telling. I imagine that Fatah / Hamas relations are at an all time low.
One reason Abbas is so pissed is that Hamas wouldn't let Fatah delegates out of Gaza to attend this important political gathering.
So how's it going at the Fatah Congress now underway in Bethlehem? here's what else Abbas said:
Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says his people must not "mar their legitimate struggle with terror" and that while his government seeks peace with Israel, it reserves the right to resort to "resistance."

Well given that "resistance" can mean by peaceful means I applaud this statement. Abbas has categorically renounced terror. Resistance of course includes state building, which is pro active. It's an action which builds concrete facts on the ground for a future Palestinian state and to me is the most effective method of peaceful resistance.
Get something going that looks like a state and ye shall have one. (moon proverb)
And of course there's negotiation, something Abbas needs to get back to.
So Fatah's new platform marginalizes "the once central theme of armed struggle".
Good news there.
