I think that with all the hulabaloo surrounding the health care issue the real issue is getting lost in the clutter. Part of this is due to poor communications from the Democrats and of course the utter failure of the traditional media to do its job. But we can help them by refocusing their energies on what needs to be done.
So lets start by stating the obvious. The health care system we currently have is in crisis. People go without treatment that could save or vastly improve their lives simply because either they can't afford or can't get health insurance. That is the simple reality we are currently faced with. Even those who do have insurance have a mountain of red tape to jump through that makes any government red tape I have ever dealt with look like a rapid flowing river of efficiency.
We all should be able to get access to hastle free basic health care. We shouldn't have to wait months to see a kidney specialist because there is only one nearby who is on our plans approved list of kidney specialists, even though there may be 3 others nearby who could easily and just as ably do the job.
We shouldn't be forced to spend hours every day on the phone arguing with insurance companies about what is covered and what is not. We shouldn't be forced to shell out thousands of dollars a year for good health insurance and still wind up bankrupt due to a prolonged illness that required an extended hospital stay.
Those things happen today now, probably to someone you know. They are not hypothetical made up theories about what might happen under a public option. And to be honest they are as bad if not worse than what the opposition is trying to scare the public with. We need to remind people of that.
