For those who can stomach it, it's on Faux News this morning right now.
He's currently in the Q & A
So far its been an uninterrupted string of grandstanding. Much of it has been easily refutable and Sen. Specter has fumbled through the easiest of them.
Even if the people asking the questions weren't directly fed the talking points, they were definitely absorbed from right-wing media sources. But the sophistication of some of the questions suggests directly fed points. For example, the bill "reads like a Russian novel" which followed closely on a questioner declaring she didn't want the U.S. to become like Russia.
Other notable grandstanders included a guy who wanted a vote of hands for people who believed they had the right to speak to their elected officials (Arlen Specter himself raised his hand), who then proceeded to declare the senator should "take that to Nancy Pelosi."
Update: Joe the Public School Teacher invoked Abe Lincoln claims that no one could understand the bill because of the way bills are divided into sections and subsections. Wants plain, high school-level language for bills.
Specter said he would "try."
Update 2: Specter directly stated he would not sponsor a bill that provided care for illegal immigrants.
Update 3: A man wants to know what will happen when people get dropped from employer plans, and what will happen to employers who won't pay for coverage plans.
Specter clarified that it wouldn't add the tax to those companies that already provide coverage.
Update 4: A lot of the grandstanding has settled down. But people are specifying they are not part of the "astroturfing." After a long speech, a gentleman proposed that Specter support a bill for term limits. I must say, I disagreed with most of his speech, but that idea has some merit.
Another woman has repeated the government access to bank accounts lie, and questioned whether it was in the Constitution. Specter fell flat on his face again by leaving the lie stand, but saying he wouldn't support a bill that allowed the gov't access to bank accounts. He started to explain the House bill that gave rise to that lie and then bailed out.
Update 5: A Guantanamo question got the brush off with no reassurance that supermax prisons are safe.
