Dear Monica, according to you:
The majority Democrats, intoxicated with power, are brimming with a haughty self-righteousness that is now veering into a prideful arrogance and self-destructive narcissism. Having misread their 2008 election victory as a mandate to push through liberalism on a grand scale, they are now stunned by opposition to their radical plans. To them, the depth and intensity of the dissent is unexpected and shocking.
One thing about liberals: It doesn't even occur to them that there is another side to an argument. They are so convinced of the righteousness of their own position that it doesn't dawn on them that a reasonable person might have a different viewpoint.
So, hum, Monica, liberals are intoxicated with power? From across the pond, where I stand, I see things a tad differently.
Your hit-piece in Washington Times today begins with the oft repeated (mis)quote of Marie-Antoinette "let them eat cake". History or rather accurate history is not your forte since there is plenty of evidence pointing to Marie-Therese having uttered those words a good hundred years earlier. You write on, "the revolt exploded shortly thereafter", and by all knowledgeable accounts, you are wrong again but it's a moot point since we are rather intoxicated with power, the knowledge of power, that is.
You continue your jeremiad with a cheap shot at Speaker Pelosi and regale your readership with these heady words "(liberals) are brimming with a haughty self-righteousness that is now veering into a prideful arrogance and self-destructive narcissism". For a second there I was thinking you reminisced about the good old days of GWB, Rumsfeld & assorted right-wing dunderheads that were literally drunk on that power you talk about but I digress.
You talk about the left being in the grips of "breathtaking arrogance", surely two words that would not come to mind with the right-wing crazy cable and radio hosts use while working up the hopelessly idiotic Republican base....what's left of it. In your coruscating world right wingers are polite, astute and well meaning, building their cases on thoroughly reviewed evidence.
You go on with "it is laughably absurd for liberals to attack Americans for exercising their First Amendment rights" yet it's ok for the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh and that dangerous clown, Beck, to overtly suggest that Obama is a racist, albeit with the same old, guilt-by-association flimsiness. A simple quote form Hannity: “It’s Sonia Sotomayor – a (wise) Latina woman, it’s – it’s OK for Barack Obama – he can hang out with Jeremiah Wright, people don’t respond to it. I don’t understand the double standard.”
So making sure we understand where you're coming from, it's ok for the tea-baggers, deathers and birthers to disrupt town-hall meetings with threats of carrying firearms, it's ok for O'Reilly to continually smear progressives and Democrats by cropping their comments in a way that misrepresent them, it's ok for Rep. Michele Bachmann who recently said that President Obama is going to put children in reeducation camps (as Sean Hannity warmly congratulated her for her crusade against tyranny), it's ok for that other nutter from the North to blather endlessly about the so-called "death-squads" that will kill her kids?
And I haven't even mentioned global warming as a hoax, or that other bunch of loonies, the creationists.
One really has to wonder how much farther down towards the loony fringe of politics your "lovely", albeit disintegrating Republican party can sink with Beck’s insanity, the continuous & hysterical scare tactics from Focked News, the wanton calls for revolution, the endless inflammatory anti-Obama screeds, the smorgasbord of apocalyptic theories about the "end of freedom and America". Never mind that Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs etc have been spewing dangerous and extremist rhetoric, steering their supporters toward hysteria and hyperventilation to kingdom come.
IMHO, on the Beck scale of crazy, you rate 8, possibly 9 out of 10. Have a nice and airy day.
