My daughter-in-law and I went to Michael Burgess' Fort Worth office today. We were able to talk with a very nice, smiling, young lady who took our paper and placed it in a stack with some brought by others. The ones we saw were on the Organizing For America form available at (link here) .
While I appreciated the OFA form, we decided to create our own:
We support Health Insurance Reform
Everyone should be entitled to Health Insurance.
Why it matters to our household:
- We are paying $23,600 per year to insure our family. That includes four college students who are unable to find their own policies because of pre-existing conditions. Our premiums will increase to (at least) $29,600 per year in January.
- Because it takes 3 policies (4 in January) to cover the students that have "aged out" of our family policy, we have $1,500 in deductibles per year, and a $15,000 of "maximum out-of-pocket expenses" per year. ($1,800 and $20,000 in January, respectively)
- The college students will only be able to stay on their policies for 3 years. After which, they will be uninsurable.
- We are robbing our 401k to keep our family insured.
Why it matters to All Texans:
- There are 6,240,000 uninsured Texans.
- Not all counties have a system like JPS or Parkland to provide care to their uninsured. For those that do use JPS, wait times in the Emergency Room of 12 or more hours are not unusual. Wait times for clinic visits can exceed several weeks.
- Clauses prohibiting customers with pre-existing conditions are keeping many Texans from obtaining insurance.
- Emergency rooms are only required, by law, to treat critically ill patients. Emergency rooms are not free; patients are billed for the services they receive.
- Medical Care costs are the leading cause of bankruptcy.

For us, it seemed better to make the presentation more personal, and we know everyone has different reasons for supporting healthcare reform.
