I heard the President yesterday and Sherrod Brown just now on The Ed Show. They tell anecdotes about people being on Medicare yet not supporting Health reform. Then they stop. They forget the second sentence, Medicare is a government program.
They forget the second sentence, Medicare is a government program. They think people are smart and will get the irony. They don’t. They won’t. Just say it. Don’t assume pointing out that someone is on Medicare that they will know it is a government program. They are older now. Their ability to connect the dots may have diminished.
Laurence O’Donnell did a wonderful job making it clear on Hardball today. He said it so anyone could understand. He pointed out that the woman’s parents who would go on Social Security would be entering a government program. He asked if she would discourage them from doing this because it is socialism. He understands how to speak clearly so all IQs may understand.
O'Donnell also pointed out that Medicare is socialism. Those demanding their country back and showing fear of "socialism" need to be educated. Unfortunately I think they really mean they want a white Republican in the White House. Still, a little education wouldn't hurt.
Please, all politicians, stop assuming the public will get the irony in your anecdotes. Some will. Most won’t. Just say the 2nd sentence, Medicare is a government program
