It's been sometime since I last posted a diary but I feel this one is a must see. The evangelicals have managed to pass a bill in 2007 that would mandate the study of the bible in ALL Texas public schools.
The law actually passed in 2007, but this will be the first school year it is enforced because the bill says, "The provisions of this act pertaining to a school district do not take effect until the 2009-2010 school year."
This has gained mixed reactions from East Texans. "I think it is a good thing because a lot of kids don't have that experience, and they already want to take prayer out of school as it is-- and you see where our kids are ending up!" said Tyler resident Laura Tucker.

How is this even remotely possible?
In theory, even I, an agnostic, could see the merits of this program. Rebutting the historical fallacies of religious texts against realities of the situations. Using the text as a source for the Crusades, the Reformation, etc as a way intellectual revolutionaries enabled their theories to be published.
In practice, we all know this will not happen. In practice, there will be only one text used. In many cases, it will merely be another way the evangelicals have pushed their religion on others. Maybe Keith Ellison should introduce a bill in Congress mandating the study of the Koran. I'm sure they'd be thrilled with that one.
Until then, I'm not sure how Texans can fight back against such actions when its explicitly stated that religion should have nothing to do with our government.
