No, I don't mean in charge in elected officials rather in tactics cultivated over the past twenty years to a fine art.  Why don't we answer the challenge?

The Republican party for all their craziness is still basically calling the shots in Washington.  Their noise machine has been finely honed to be able to distort, dismantle or destroy anything that a Democratic administration wants to do. Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay in conjunction with Dick Armey seized control of congress and built the iron clad Republican majority with strong arm, take no prisoners approach to policies and actions. The Republicans have shown that they are inept at governing when they get power but expert tacticians while out of power. Why do we let them to continue unabated these same tactics while not representing an elected position?

Where are the Democratic Bulldogs? Why aren't they out howling and scratching like the Republicans? I'm a great believer in Blogs but sound bytes are really whats needed. Democrats are too polite and worried about always doing the right thing.  They worry about image more than results.  Politics is a dirty game and to pretend otherwise is foolish.  One of the reasons that Republicans can control the message is that they have no regard for truth.  They think that being in church on Sunday makes them a Christian, and I suppose that the also think that being in a garage makes them an automobile. The bolder and wilder the claim that they make, the more it is repeated as a 5 second sound byte and, as we all know that if something is repeated often enough a certain percentage of people will believe it to be true.

The Republican allies are also aiding their noise machine.  Ron Paul supporters are reported to be the ones bringing guns to Rallies. The constituency the Republicans represent have all the money in the world to fund phony grass roots groups and bankroll the "movement" and then try to sell it as legitimate.  Stirring up Racial and cultural biases is also helpful to the right. We see the President being portrayed as a Nazi, a Commie, a Socialist a Racist while simultaneously being called an elitist.  That just about covers every possible scary person in the world except for father stabbers, mother rapers and father rapers.

So what to do.  If you can't beat them, become them. In other words abandon the self righteousness that we have and go for the jugular vein.
Ignore any attempt at bi partisanship which the Republicans never even considered during their glory days.  Get the left involved in TV stunts like the Tea Parties and Republican Town Hall meetings  .  I see no reason why the left can't also bring guns and placards defending Obama' s policies and clearly stating that we are not going to let the thugs take away our freedom of speech. Join the NRA in droves and take control of the organization from the inside.

We need to speak to and for those who are sincerely afraid of the state of the country right now and I'm one of them.  I grew up under the nuclear threat but I'm more concerned about our country now than I ever was, save for the Cuban Missile Crisis, during the cold war.

It's awfully hard to gain their trust when we keep telling them that relief is just around the corner only to have another story come out about how bailed out Bankers just got a multimillion dollar bonus or when companies continue to lay off thousands and foreclosures continue to go on anabated.

We know that the media don't and won't give these people the information that they need to hear, only the information that is interesting enough and causes enough controversy as to create better ratings so they can sell more expensive advertising.

What proactive measure could we take?  We could, through various groups, hold our own town halls by invitation only and invite people who have these genuine fears to come and not only tell us their problems but to invite them to become a part of the solution.  I am sure that within a two block radius of anyone's house that their are more than enough stories illustrating the truth about, let's say, private Healthcare or lack thereof and Medicare and Veterans Health Care that it would be easy to convince people that they really do need change or to logically answer their fears about what they have heard. If we have to stretch the truth, which in most cases is impossible, about a certain subject so be it if it gets the point across.

Unfortunately the righties got an enormous jump on us but we saw the reaction of the White House when we did speak out over last weekend.
I am very frustrated that the Left is always so morally correct that some would rather cave in than do the right thing just so as we don't hurt a non existent relationship between the political parties.  If the blue dogs are afraid of losing their districts to angry Republicans because they voted for Democratic reform policies, imagine how they will feel when they lose because their Democratic base fails to show up.  I remember that happened to Republicans that strayed from the approved party line when Delay was in charge, replaced in the next election with a more loyal person.

These issues that are before us today are way to important than to worry about hurt feelings. Health Care, the Climate,Free Choice Act just can't wait any longer. To delay is to Delay. To hell with bipartisanship.  Show these angry people what is in their own interest. Get r done!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

They are actively shrinking their party as if it were the new cool thing to do. Once good reform is passed, which it will be, and once people see the world not ending and their insurance costs going down, the republican party will shrink even more.

This is not about public option or any particular issue. It is a matter of ideology. These people don't trust government. To them government is not a tool of the community, it is an alien, bureaucratic force. It is not a potential instrument of American greatness and power, it is an anti-American force.

The first thing we have to do is change the view of government- radically change it, among conservatives, independents and moderates, and even some liberals. That requires ideology. It requires a closed, structured, consistent manner of thinking that's not easy for some liberals, but which is more effective than trying to fight issue by issue.

jedennis, flyonawall have to be on the side of Democrats who are so spectacularly deferential to the corrupt, lying, stupid, religitard, hypocritical, obstructionist, deceitful, immoral, uncivil and repulsive republicans and their zombie horde followers. We've got a small window of opportunity to improve the nation but instead the Democrats continue to behave as if these shitbars have anything worthwhile to contribute. It's irritating. I don't want to have to see a republican on TV or see conservative columnists dominate the newspapers for another 2 1/2 years. WE WON! IT'S FUCKING OUR TIME!

  •  Can I post the probably unpopular answer (0+ / 0-)

    that I believe?

We don't yet have the institutional Democratic Party that can stop it yet.

We have a massive amount of crap to swim around to get good policy passed. Yet, everytime there is a policy trainwreck, we don't see that its bigger than bad messaging or a bad part.

We have the bad faith of the GOP, we have the nightmare of a traditional media that parrots RW talking points and carries out teardown campaigns against Democrats everytime a Democrat is in the White House or in either House majorities or both, and we have a party that simply isn't engineered to prevent the hijackings of important policy debates by tiny subgroups who are hostile to Democratic Party policies as much as the GOP is.

The next step in Storming the Gates, I believe, is a 10 to 20 year push to completely transform the parties infrastructure. It's people like us getting into the Democratic Party and taking it over from the inside. I think there are strategic limits to blogging, and that is what we are running into when he get to the concern trolling the liberals into shutting the fuck up and letting the grown-ups talk. Sometimes, the "grown-ups" are making a huge tactical as well as political mistake. There comes a point where the institutional party can ignore us when they are doing something that is self-destructive just to claim "victory", and they do. Even if it hurts them later.

And, unfortunately, we have Democrats who hate Democratic ideas as much as any Movement Conservative does. Jim Cooper and Mike Ross in the House come to mind. I don't want to purge them, I want a Democratic Party that makes them pay a price for bad behavior that hurts the rest of the party gravely so they can attempt to wield power disproportionate to their numbers in the party.

Imagine a GOP that had a powerful minority that attacked Movement Conservatism  and Movement Conservatives and had its wing dedicated to gatekeeping them and their ideas out of policy discussions wherever possible.

Even if it meant handing the most liberal wing of the Democratic Party big policy victories.

We, as liberals, would love them.

I know moderates. Real ones. I'm proud to call them my friends. They believe in moderating policy, not gatekeeping liberals out of policy debates and discussions and enabling the far Right to have a kind of legislative apartheid where the minority can dictate what is, and is not, possible.

You would have to be stupid, or pretty cravenly just serving your own selfish interests in preserving your own power, to ignore the staggering amount of bad faith coming out of the GOP in the House and the Senate on healthcare reform.

There is simply no reason for the Democratic Party, or any part or wing of it, to act as if we have had a good faith partner in negotiations on healthcare reform. Grassley is talking up Death Panels as much as Rush Limbaugh is. He's the guy Max Baucus is trusting to not make a fool out of him.

There is going to come a time when a generation long overhaul of the Democratic Party is going to have to get fully underway.

Or, we face handing over our nation to our children and grandchildren with a Democratic Party that has to beat the GOP, the media, and parts of itself to win.

It took the Republican Party almost utterly destroying the economy of this country to overcome the strategic and tactical disadvantages the Democratic Party that is has to overcome to win.

The GOP isn't always going to be so suicidal as to allow its white power wing to openly declare war on hispanics when hispanics are the fastest growing minority vote for example. When they go back to the quiet crazy in the service of corporate billions like they have done in the past, we are going to get Dukakised and Gored again if we don't transform the party.

  •  Democrats need to be tougher (0+ / 0-)

That isn't the same thing as being nasty, or rude, or dirty.

But Democrats do need to stop backing down, stop not being absolutely clear about what the issues and opposing policies are and about what they mean for all of us, and need to stop giving in to wrong policies when pushed.

You can be tough with dignity, and integrity, and even civility.

  •  What the Dems who gloat and talk about the GOP (0+ / 0-)

saying stupid things (or outright lying) don't seem to get is that the GOP isn't talking to them. They are talking to that small percentage of bat-shit crazy "Ammericuns" who are still think they are entitled to do whatever they want, and that the Constitution and free speech only applies to them. They are free to call others Hitler and yell Socialism, even though what their actions speak of is full-on Fascism at its bes and terrorism at its worse.

Because even as small as the group is, they are willing to do over-the-top crazy shit to be heard. And they get more of their fair share of press because of right-wing media outlets like CNN and Fox.

The GOP knows they are stupid and predictable (and therefore controllable), so they fully play to their anxieties, providing them with their guns and their religion. Oh yeah, and their hate-talk and general paranoia.

These are the people who are running this country (into the ground).

What makes the Dems so stupid is they continually underestimate this bunch time after time again. Sort of like Charley Brown does when Lucy is holding the football.

  •  Why? (0+ / 0-)

    They are not in charge.
The insurance industry is in charge.
The Blue Dog Democrats and their allies are heeding the instructions of their true masters.

I'm starting to lose faith that any real change will occur.

Where is Reid?  Why don't we force a vote?  Why not make them filibuster it.  Make Democrats support the filibuster of a Democratic bill on the record.

You only need 51 votes to pass a bill in the Senate.  But 60 to vote for cloture.   Why don't we have the votes for cloture?  That's the issue.

  •  The GOP is not in charge. (0+ / 0-)

What kind of amnesiac fantasy world is it where Congress is supposed to instantly pass reforms this profound?  First of all, we're not starting from scratch like during the Great Depression, we're trying to drastically REFORM an existing system - that's complicated.  Secondly, it isn't likely to reach patients for some time after passage.

Thirdly, it doesn't matter that Republicans instantaneously "rammed through" their agenda when they were in control - they didn't care whether anything actually worked or who supported it, and now the consequences of that are that we are in control.  Let's stay there.

  •  No Backbone (0+ / 0-)

We need more powerful leaders.  Reid needs to go - he's worthless.  Too many of them, even Obama, are too hung up on bipartisianship.  It's so obvious that on healthcare the Republicans are not going to play so stop trying to please them and just get it done.

And where is the leadership to drag in the Blue Dogs?  We need someone to strong arm anyone who steps out of line.

If the crazy Bushies can sell Americans on going to war based on lies, why can't the Democrats sell Americans on ANYTHING?
