As many of you know, I am in Seattle caring for my ailing grandmother. While up here, I found out an old high school friend was running for the King County Executive job left vacant when Ron Sims joined the Obama Administration. I diaried, posted, cajoled, begged and pleaded for you to donate to his campaign in any way you could. The frontrunner in the race was a former news anchor who has been outed as a republican. The mail-in vote was on Tuesday and the ballots are slowly trickling in...
In the State of Washington, the top two vote getting candidates are in the general despite party affiliation. Dow is a Democrat and Ms. Hutchison is a republican, conveniently. Ms. Hutchison was a long-time news anchor for the CBS affiliate here in Seattle. She was let go for a younger woman of color and sued her employers for discrimination. She was trying to fly under the radar as republicans have a rough go of it in Seattle. Luckily, a local subversive newspaper picked up on the ploy and ratted her out.

This is what motivated me to endorse my old friend and write a diary about it. I did not want a stealth republican to slip into office while no one was looking. Besides, as I said in my diary, Dow was a fairly popular person on campus and was so for all of the correct reasons, not all of the wrong ones. He was a bit of a chameleon. He was in the school band (we'll have to get him to say, "and one time at band camp" after he gets elected). And, he was the student body president. I'm not going to list all of his accomplishments. If you are interested, you can check it out at:

The important accomplishment now is that he is taking on a well-known, well-funded republican in a Liberal Democratic stronghold and we cannot let him lose. Now, some might say that he only came in second and only got 23% of the vote compared to Susan Hutchison, who came in first and had over 35% of the vote. I would have to counter that there were eight people running for the open seat and Ms. H was the only republican. The fact that she was on the air here for over twenty years and could not get over forty percent. When you start adding up all of the other Democratic contenders' votes, Dow becomes a very serious contender and that's why I am here today.
I firmly believe that all of my begging, pleading, and cajoling of my fellow Kossacks that we were able to help Dow over the hump to take on a very despicable character. I cannot thank all of you who helped, in whatever way you could, enough. You were all great and I am so proud of each and every one of you. We cannot let the republicans have the headline that a republican was elected in the heart of the least religious and most liberal part of the country. It is simply unacceptable.

In addition, Dow has been out on the forefront of the Maury Island concrete pit issue. GlacierNorthwest wants to start extracting over 40,000 tons of concrete a day instead of 20,000 tons a year. Dow has led many protests to stop this threat to the island, the Puget Sound, and the bucolic lifestyle in the mostly farm areas of Vashon and Maury Islands. Well, a federal judge handed the protesters and Dow a huge victory just before the election. He halted any expansion plans in their tracks.

Dow is the better, progressive Democrat that this site is supposed to be helping to get elected. We won a huge battle. Now, it is time to win the war. I am asking, begging, pleading, and cajoling all of you to do what you can and I will continue to do so until the first Tuesday in November.
