It may be time to consider changing election law to reflect local mercury contamination levels -- voters in states where the neurotoxin level exceeds EPA standards in water and fish will have to undergo lab tests for mercury poisoning. If you test over the limit, you can't vote. Similar to drunk driving laws.

Elections have consequences, sometimes deadly. If we feel compelled to test people for DUII, how about for having mercury levels in the toxic range? Should they be allowed to vote? I realize this is a slippery slope. Should we allow those with an IQ below a certain level to vote, or those with medical conditions like Alzheimer's to vote?
We shouldn't shie away from these issues for fear of violating rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. These problems simply did not exist when it was written.
