If you don't know the background about a Dallas Vet whose wife is blind and is getting our help click here. It's remarkable the degree to which help has been extended by all of you.
Tomorrow is Move Day
we need 2 trucks & 4 movers
but there has been a dramatic change in plans
The apartment the Leo's had lined up fell through. It's due to the same thing that keeps so many recently impoverished people from ever rising out of poverty. Another credit problem surfaced and the Leo's never knew it existed. We can't and won't allow that to stop this couple. We can't let that happen - and we won't.
IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM SCOTT AT THE KINSHIP PROJECT
Financial note
We have a fair, but not huge, balance in the account dedicated to moving Leo's family. We're ok, right now, to pay for the extended stay motel and we'll have funds to cover a move-in for a new apt., assuming we don't have to pay more than a month or two security deposit. Financially, the only goal is to get the family into a decent residence and let his well-earned benefits take care of them down the road.
llbear mentioned in his first diary that he wouldn't normally bring a vet's issue to dKos. I'm in a similar state of mind - I wouldn't involve TKP in a strictly veteran's issue, simply because there are many Kossacks who need help and we're not trying to focus on any particular group of folks.
But, damn it! I've got my teeth, heart and soul in this particular case now, and I will not give up. I've spoken to Leo on the phone a few times, and I guaranteed him that his family will not end up on the streets. I guaranteed it because I know that, finances aside, there are good folks that simply will not allow that to happen.
We'll have a better handle on things after the weekend. For the moment, let's not focus on the financial aspect - let's get some strong backs and trucks together, and help Leo's family pack up and leave the old place behind.
Yes we can!
Scott -
At 9:30 tomorrow morning the Leo's will leave behind 6 hours of Leo trapped into traveling by public bus to attend college classes. You made that possible. There lease is up and they need to move now. We have sufficient money to make it possible for the Leo's to housed for 1 week in an extended stay hotel near campus. He will be on the road for only 20 minutes by courtsey van.
Our intrupid professional apartment hunter is lining up a list of places for the Leo's to check out into which they can move. Scott from the KINship project is ready to make sure we have the Leo's backs. That man is a damn fine organizer.
Kroger gift cards would be greatfully appreciated.
This is short. UPDATE on Dad: He's doing pretty good. Last night we moved him to a very good rehab center. He's not been there long enough to like or dislike it.
