What is going on is not the fault of the rightwing sickos. It is OUR fault for letting them get away with it and not seizing the biggest opportunity in political history.
Democrats don't win a lot of presidential elections.
Worse, when they do, they simply don't have a single idea how to take that victory and turn it into a meaningful reality.
For some odd reason, the second a Democrat takes office, a giant portion of the Democratic and liberal establishment shuts down, curls up into a large ball and begins to wither. Worse, the remaining portion spends all of their time and resources attacking the president and their party for not doing exactly what their agenda calls for. In other words, they link hands with the rightwing nutjobs and blast away.
Which is why today, the Becks, O'Reillys, Limbaughs and Birthers now control the mainstream and web media - and with it, the agenda.
All the congressional Republicans need do is sit back. Even Ann Coulter can sit back. There is no reason why they should get their skirts muddied. By not getting involved, they let the nutjobs, the Democrats and a happily cooperative media do the job themselves - on themselves. They know that by the time 2010 rolls around, they will look like sane, strong political thinkers.
So here's the deal, people.
Unless you want us watching helplessly as the GOP easily retakes Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012, all of you - and I mean ALL OF YOU had better think back to what you were feeling the day before Barack Obama was elected.
The helplessness, the rage, the frustration of seeing our country go down the drain - and hoping against hope that one man could rescue us.
Get over that fantasy. Today. Get back into the streets get back onto the airwaves. And take out your checkbooks. If we're not out there with the same fervor as the nutjobs, we lose. If we're not showing up in droves at those townhall meetings and out-shouting, out-slugging and yep, out-reasoning the nutjobs, we lose.
If we let that happen, then we'll just have wasted the single most important opportunity in the history of this country. We'll have failed to stand behind our single best, smartest hope for changing the way this country does business and treats its own citizens.
Stop putting your anger on him. He's one man. He's brilliant. He makes mistakes but he can do the job we need him to do.
But without all that money, organization, fight and brilliance we displayed to get him elected, he's going to fail.
To put it simply, without YOU standing squarely behind him, vocalizing and if necessary, manning the barricades, he is going to fail.
IF we let this happen (we DO have a choice) then we can all whine together as some Palin or Romney or other moron arises from the wreckage.
There's still time to prevent that. IF we do something now.
Rest assured, we will never again in our lifetimes get another chance like the one we have now.
Please take advantage of it.
