Folks, this ain't good news. Opening arguments have been heard by the Supremes. MSNBC's Pete Williams is reporting that 3 Justices were already inclined to completely remove any restrictions on corporate dollars in the political arena (Guess who they are? HINT: You won't be surprised)
He then went on to say that Bush's lakeys seemed in their questions to go along with the rest of the conservative members on the bench.
Of course, there is precious little on this in the MSM.
(They probably love it!)
To add insult to injury, the entity known as "Citizens United" (wasn't that a subtitle to Police Academy 4?) has Ted Olsen of Bush v. Gore fame to argue their case. Here's a quote, via AP:
"Robust debate ... is the most fundamental value" protected by the First Amendment, argued Theodore Olson, the attorney representing Citizens United, the conservative group that made the movie. Olson said the government in this case "has prohibited speech."
Robust debate? The ability to smear anyone who disagrees with you is more like it. Sheesh.
Seriously, don't corporations control enough of our society, our lives? If the supreme wingnuts on the court "win the day", grassroots campaigns won't mean shit. You'd better get Bud Light or GEICO to sponsor your leafletting, or you might just get thrown in debtors' prison.
Meet the new boss, same as the old monarchy, or fascists if you prefer.
Ok, I'm a little over the top, but you get my drift.
Update: OK, I'm freaked out about this.
This is possibly, the worst thing that could happen to our country. We joke about the constitution for the corporations, by the corporations and so on, but this ruling could very well make this a reality. Our rights have been whittled away to almost nothing as it is. What will it be like afterward? If you didn't know, if you're not in a UNION, except for some weak ass regulations from OSHA and the EEOC, you don't have any rights once you enter the front door of your workplace. You have no right to stand up to your boss/employer if you think they're doing something or funding something morally reprehensible.
Now it seems you won't have them once you get off the clock.
