I was floored when I read this column in the Eagle Forum's Education Reporter. I can't seriously believe that someone would be so opposed to public education
In a column appearing in the Eagle Forum's (Phyliss Schlafly's group) monthly newsletter, "Education Reporter", David d'Escoto, a home school advocate, chastises conservative parents for sending their kids to public schools. Why, you may ask? Because these schools:
are literally controlled by the left — meaning that it is only the liberals' "values," "morals" and curriculum that are taught in our government schools.
To prove that all public schools are controlled by the Left, d'Escoto quotes eight scholars, some of who have the audacity to suggest that education is a powerful ally of humanism (you know Renaissance and stuff).
I am just plain shocked. I did not know that chemistry, biology, algebra, geometry, Spanish, literature, gym and grammar were evil liberal concoctions taught just to indoctrinate kids to accept and adore a liberal ideology. Well, they are called the liberal arts.
Scary part, d'Escoto is serious. Did you know that Stalin used public education as a weapon? Did you know that public education is bad because Karl Marx called for it in the Communist Manifesto? (What were the Puritans of New England thinking? They must be pre-Marxists!) Did you know that public education is not as "American an apple pie" but is rooted in Prussianism. (Now, you may not know, especially if you were educated by d'Escoto, that Prussia had a miraculous rise from obscurity to becoming the master of Germany in less than 200 years, much of it due to its emphasis on public education. We would never want the U.S. to achieve such success!)
For a home school advocate, d'Escoto seems to have little use for critical thinking, or any thinking for that matter as he just claims things to be true without real evidence or common sense:
Fact after fact shows that when children are subject to 12 years of liberal ideologies for about 14,000 hours of their lives, the overwhelming majority of them will grow up to think, act and vote like . . . you guessed it, liberals. We ignore all of that even when studies shows that "83% of children from committed Christian families attending public schools adopt a Marxist-Socialist worldview." Question: How long can the conservatives hold out when the liberals are having somewhere between a 70-90% success rate at proselytizing our children to their leftist worldview? Those are the facts, people.
I am dying to see what studies he is citing. I didn't realize that there were so many socialists in this country. Why isn't their political party more successful? d'Escoto ends with a call to arms:
Let's quit complaining about how bad things are in America and do something about it. Let's pull our kids out. If we don't, then are we not the truly insane ones? You know: "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
d'Escoto really cannot be serious. He is advocating nothing more than ignorance. Why should children suffer because of their parent short-sightedness. Besides, how many of us really paid attention that much in school. I must have missed the indoctrination. With this kind of thinking, China and India will eclipse us economically in no time.
