This may be considered a sequel to my not-so-wildly successful diary, Dollhouse Season Finale: WTF?
I welcome thoughts, below. This time I'm not drunk. I promise.
Spoilers abound, so do not read if you do not want to know.
I REPEAT: SPOILERS BELOW! Fair warning.
I never saw Epitaph Now.
Apollo Adama as arms dealer. They let him use his British accent. Bully for him. I'm sure he had fun playing a complete bastard.
Next week Col. Tigh will make a guest appearance. Of course Helo is already Ballard, and there's the pyromaniac from the X-Files who played the asshole FBI agent. Are they going to go through all the actors from BSG:the Re-Imagined Series? Let me know when Starbuck shows up. She was the only one of that lot worth watching (aside from Lt. Castillo, of course).
Dr. Saunders' scars do actually add character. She sort of made a joke about that, but it's true, they make her interesting.
Victor was repaired. That was quick. I thought they were going to make a story about what they were going to do with him after he was so horribly scarred. But I guess not. So DeWitt's still got the hots for him? Why else would she fix his face and not Saunders'?
I so don't care about the Sierra/Victor romance. How romantic can it be, really, when both lovers are mind-wiped to the mental state of a child and never remember any time they have together?
Oh no! Wesley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer got elected to the Senate! And he's determined to expose Rossum and inevitably, the Dollhouse! Whatever will they do?
Why didn't Topher take Saunders up on her offer? True, she was an artificial personality (that he created) having a psychotic breakdown as a result of realizing she was an artificial personality. But he could do worse.
Ballard is Echo's handler. I so called it in the previous diary. That's fucked up, since the handler is almost like a parent, and Echo is Ballard's platonic love. Not "platonic" in the modern sense, in the old-school sense. She's his Beatrice and little girl all rolled up into one.
The show loves these warped dynamics. Remember the episode where Sierra was being raped by her handler? Ooky overtones of pedophilia. And I guess the same with Topher/Saunders, since he is her "father" in a sense.
Boyd treating Saunders like a real person instead of a construct, trying to get to know her. Fascinating. He's the kind of decent man who would do that, of course. No one else in the Dollhouse would.
So Ballard's fantasy is...that Echo's his partner helping him catch Apollo the arms dealer? And he rubs her feet when they're sore? And he came up with the plan to basically whore Echo out to Apollo. Some part of him must have enjoyed listening to Echo and Apollo have sex. I agree with Boyd. That's really sick. But it's making Ballard more and more interesting by the minute.
Man, and then he beat her up to try to trigger her martial-arts-master personality. Ugh. That I did not enjoy watching.
Echo's emergent personality sensing that she's been wiped and wants to recover the 39 personalities that Alpha imprinted on her, spiritual quest, Ballard suddenly wants to help and be her friend after exploiting her, blah blah blah. But I could care less frankly. I don't care so much about the dolls as I do about what the dolls reveal about the people who interact with them. Hopefully Whedon's smart enough to realize that.
