Today I received an urgent plea from the Courage Campaign.

With just six weeks to go until the November 3 election, a poll was just released showing the No on 1 (Marriage Equality in Main) campaign down by two points -- 48 to 46 percent. We can win this, but it's going to take all of us working together to defeat the scaremongers.

The opposition has hired Schubert/Flint -- the same consultants who launched and won Prop 8 -- to run the same campaign in Maine. Predictably, they are working from the same playbook to take away marriage equality from Mainers, spreading lies about children in schools and fear about religion.

Remember the California ad last year that tried to scare voters with a lie that their kids would be taught about gay marriage in elementary school? Well, they just replaced the California teacher with a Maine teacher -- only this teacher is a right-wing fanatic that teaches in a conservative Christian private school.

This has to be seen to be believed.

The Maine No on 1 campaign need your help immediately to cover the costs of the response ad buy. They are $30,000 short and need to raise the funds within the next 48 hours.

This is what we're fighting for.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

  •  In Maine, this thing is called the People's Veto (0+ / 0-)

    ...   The People's Veto #1

    Question 1: People's Veto
An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom
"Do you want to reject the new law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?"

    http://www.maine.gov/...

And that, IMO,  is how you need to start refering  to it because the language of the bill would let a minority of out of state Republican PR shysters veto your state's legislature.

I fixed your tags, Prop 8 was the CA ballot initiative with the same goal, which is letting Republicans use churches to do tax exempt and money laundering of unusually large campaign donations-  while dragging Repubs to the polls to destroy other's civil rights.

      •  You're welcome, the Veto 1 people use such mis- (0+ / 0-)

... leading advertising it's disgusting.  They take a private Christian school teacher and use her in an ad to say that she's being forced to teach this against her will which violates her faith-  she is a liar, pure and simple, because she is not a PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER and they are not "teaching" marriage in schools anyway!

I read one of her Teabagger speeches she performed, and it's the exact same phrasing my bigoted republican congressperson used during his campaign, because it's coming out of the think tank, the Claremont Institute.

Which is funded by a real estate banker who also works on creating a schism in the Episcopal Church.

        People need to wake up.

I just hate getting these requests for money. I don't have any to spare and I think it is a stupid way to run a campaign.

Instead of begging for money to buy ads, campaigns should seek innovative and creative ideas that will result in massive free publicity.

Buying ad time is like using prostitutes, paying for what your own inability to get for free denies you.

I am not in such a creative mood, having done a big diary and suffered through the 49-ers tragedy today. But even uninspired I could suggest things like public readings of traditional kid's stories performed by "ordinary" gay couples. Re-enactments of "separate-but-equal policies at restaurants and public places. Mark public drinking fountains as "straight" and "gay". Do somehtng with lobster (I grew up in summers on the coast, and studied in Hancock). Maybe do something with "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" by showing family arrangements on each planet. i don't know. Ingest your muse and come up with something!

I understand the practicality and effects of paid ads. But it isn't the only way. Nor is it the best way.

Is it not written "There's a lot goes on we don't get told."? (Lu Tze)

... editor and explain what a bunch of *****s the Schubert Flint Republican affiliated political operatives are.  emphasize how they like to waste other people's money when they could be paying taxes for useful things, and the fact that the money is coming from out of state, also, to run this bigoted campaign.  Tell people to go to the state of CA's records at cal access and look it up.

That would be a free and not too difficult thing to do that would be just as effective.  They need a multi pronged approach, all venues, not just media buys.

Surely Maine is not as full of nutballs as CA is to go along with this crap.

  •  And Schubert Flint, the SacramentoCA based PR (0+ / 0-)

... firm that ran the Prop 8 campaign here in CA, is looking at this not from an ideological viewpoint of whether it is "fair" or not, but as a giant cash cow to suck more money out of a dysfuntional political system that ignores real issues and focuses on the bedrooms.

I checked  one of the PACs working for this, and Schubert Flint has already recieved $30,000 from standformarriagemaine.com

I guess I'll keep commenting here until somebody else shows up.
