September 26 through October 3, 2009, is Banned Books Week.
Why is this important to you?
There are those who wish to impose their narrow, unforgiving worldview on everyone else. They want to tell you what YOUR children should and should not be allowed to read. They want to pass judgment on your parenting choices, your very system of values that you choose to pass along. They accuse you of contributing to the downfall of society, anarchy, hatred of God and country.
They begin this process by banning books.
They don't want a discussion on values, ethics or empowerment. They don't want your children to see the bright beautiful world in front of them. They don't want the next generation to have open hearts and open minds and hope that they can work with others from all walks of life to make this nation and world a better place.
They would rather feed children fear, hatred and ignorance. Teach them to look down on others who do not share their beliefs, to close their hearts and minds to those who are "different" or "inferior". Treat them as the enemy.
Your local library has likely been beset with these arguments over the past few years. They have likely also been battered by budget cuts in the recent economic crash. This would be a wonderful time to support your library's mission however you can.
As a child, one of my fondest summer memories is my mother driving my sister and I to the Carnegie Library in town to get two books every week. I never made it a week with my books, I usually finished them in a matter of 2-3 days. I'm sure a lot of you here in the community can relate to this and recognize what a vital resource libraries are. But they're only as strong as the support they receive.
Speak out. Let YOUR voice be heard over those who would censor free thought and knowledge. Support freedom.
UPDATE: Awesome, a Rescue Rangers shout-out! Thanks so much, guys.
