Sick of the media attacks on this organization committed to helping the working class and impoverished peoples of America, then join the fight against the smear campaign.

ACORN (Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now) is a well-known community organizing group that fights for the rights of the typically downtrodden. Their list of campaign points are as follows ( from their campaign rundown, linked HERE ):
-Preventing foreclosures
-Gulf Coast recovery
-Immigration issues
-Living wage
-Paid sick days
-Fighting predatory lending
-Reforming utility practices
-Voter engagement
Lately, the right-wing and MSM have been focusing on attacking ACORN unfairly because of a few things ACORN has done in the past combined with GOP talking points that ACORN does all sorts of illegal things (which is untrue, that video showing a pimp and prostitute requesting information at an ACORN office was STAGED). Now, the Congress has decided to throw in the towel and cut off all of their 3 million dollar annual funding to this organization.
Rachel Maddow covered the smear campaign, here's a clip from her show:
However, despite the bad news, Representative Alan Grayson was clever enough to put in language into the House bill that would make it so that if the government is going to defund ACORN because of its few unethical actions of the past, then it should defund all government contractors that have done unethical things with government money. This would pertain to companies like Blackwater/Xe, KBR, DynCorp, Halliburton, etc. Mr. Grayson said that he is optimistic that this language will make it through conference. Good on him to help ensure fairness in this issue.
ACORN is an imperfect organization, but their goals are extremely legitimate and should be promoted, especially during a recession.

Update: A good, poignant comment from below:
They do need to reorganize (2+ / 0-)
and change their name, because it has been tainted and will always raise a red flag thanks to the GOP.
I want Acorn to survive despite the bad experience I had with a local group years ago when I tried to work with them. Bad management was one reason.
