I just got a phone call from the NRA, or at least a polling service hired by the NRA and based in Manassas, Virginia. It started with a live speaker identifying himself and asking me to take a one-question poll about efforts at gun control. I threw him off the script when I said there were no new gun control efforts going through Congress. He didn't know what to say, but asked me to listen to a brief message from NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre.
Mr. LaPierre's message and the poll question after the jump.
The pre-recorded message from Mr. LaPierre informed me that the United Nations is having "behind closed doors" meetings in an effort to ban guns. According to Mr. LaPierre, the goal of these secret meetings is a UN treaty banning guns throughout the world. He also pointed out that UN treaties never expire. At some point, he lauded the Second Amendment and what it means for freedom.
Following the message, a man who identified himself as Wayne and a member of the NRA got on the line. He asked me to answer a single question, which I'll do my best to quote: "Do you believe United States gun policy should be set by Hillary Clinton and third-world dictators?"
I asked Wayne if could record a free response answer. He seemed slightly confused so I asked him to write down that the question was an offensive push poll question. I even repeated it for him a second time. He then informed me he could only put down yes or no. I let him know that I refused to answer the question, told him goodbye, and hung up.
So, the NRA's push poll got the UN, third-world dictators, and Secretary of State Clinton grouped together as the bogeymen. On the bright side, President Obama was left off the list, as were those wacky "activist judges." I'm not really sure about what action to take, but consider this a heads up. I hate the idea of anyone else sitting through a similar phone call, but I hope someone can flush out the message and get the actual poll question quoted.
