So Washington D.C. has been looking for a corporate sponsor to buy the naming rights for RFK stadium as the new Washington Nationals prepare to begin their inaugural season. Well, a group of D.C. residents have gotten together to propose a proper name for the stadium! Check out their campaign and make a pledge (my partner and I pledged $100, and we are poor grad students).
Taxation Without Representation Field at RFK Stadium
FYI- for those of you not in the know, D.C. residents pay federal taxes but have absolutely no federal representation in Congress (the House or the Senate), although D.C. has more residents than some states. Frankly, we D.C. residents are also sick of having Senators and Reps. from Alabama and Wyoming controlling our local budget and policy decisions, since Congress has final say on these issues.
As another blogger on the internet (edward) said: "Can you imagine radio and television announcers having to explain, at the start of each home game, why the field is called "Taxation Without Representation"? It's the modern day Boston Tea Party, except stretched out over an entire season. It's a thumb in the eye to the President. It's capitalism married to activism. I love it!"
