Francis Schaefer is right, we need to take Christianity back from the "Christians". Today's "Christians"--at least most of the conservative and rightwing kind are the Pharisees and religious zealots of our day. You could make a good case that the Pharisees are the Republican Party and Religious Right and the zealots are the tea baggers and domestic haters that they stir up and use to promote their agenda. That is why the Republicans are against any kind of health care reform and the zealots are cranked up to disrupt Town Hall meetings screeching nonsense. In the meantime, most of them will "thank God", "praise the Lord" and go to Church weekly.
But, the truth of the matter is, they don't know what they are talking about--Biblically, or in many other matters. If someone was to actually read the Bible, Jesus not only heals the sick, but cares for the poor and unfortunate. The ones he is not too kind with is the Pharisees and the other religious leaders of their day (who want to keep their money and power--sound familiar?).
With that being said, let's open the Bible to Matthew 15:29-31
"15:29Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel".
So, American "Christians" are bleating against health care reform and allegedly praise God, while their leader, Jesus actually healed all those brought to him--FOR FREE! Not only do I wonder how these "Christians" claim to reconcile with this, but if they truly "believe" what do they think will happen when they die and meet Jesus?
