Huffington Post is reporting that Justice Kennedy has blocked Washington State officials from releasing the names of signers of the petition to put Referendum 71 on the WA state ballot next month. The block will remain while he considers the case.
Referendum 71 seeks to revoke a law the Washington state legislature created legally recognizing domestic partnership. It applies to any couple, regardless of gender.
Kennedy stayed a US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that agreed with gay rights and open government activists that the names had to be released.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed [a lower court] decision last week. The appeals court said Thursday that Washington's secretary of state can release the names and addresses of people who signed petitions calling for a public vote.
I fail to see what's so awful about asking people who are advocating to change the law of the land for everyone, be denied anonymity. Sorry. If you want to change the law, put your name on the cause. If you're ashamed to put your name on it, that should tell you something right there about what you're doing.
And sorry. I don't buy that the gay mafia is going to come get you.
Why you gotta hide your name if the baby Jesus is on your side? In the future, maybe don't sign stuff if you're afraid to put your name on it.
