I'm tired of all the "Obama must hold Bush/Cheney accountable" diaries on this site. There are reasons Obama CANNOT do anything about this, and they are reasons that cannot be found in textbooks.
Bush and Cheney are well connected, and none of us can know just how much.
Presidents who go too far in upsetting the power elite only make it so far. If we want President Obama to undo Bush and Cheney's damage to this nation, we have to have the patience to allow him to do so within the framework of what is POSSIBLE.
He cannot make the focus of his presidency Special Prosecutors and Court Cases. He needs to fix our economy, pass health care reform, and take steps to back us away from the madness Bush and Cheney instated as normal national policy.
Yes, he has a duty to stop torture. We, as a nation, need to be the "good guys" we always say we are when we justify our place on the world stage. But you all appear to be unwilling to look at the limitations placed on President Obama's elected office.
He is mostly powerless to act on what has happened so far.
His power lies more in guiding what happens next.
How in fuck does "holding them accountable" solve anything?
And how in fuck does one go about making that happen?
