Food memories are something everyone has. The scent of it cooking or the taste of it on our tongue transports us back momentarily to places and times past. We remember family gatherings that are now parted by death and by great chasms of anger. We remember younger days, when we ourselves were different people.
In my particular faith tradition, this is a time to remember. We have a potluck dinner, and bring foods that bring up memories for us, tell stories, laugh and cry, and find community and peace in the act.
We don't deal with death well in our culture. We're supposed to go on, get over it. For me, this is a time every year to remember, to grieve if I need to, and to connect with the past.
So I offer this to you in this community. Bring your virtual dishes. Bring your memories. Bring photos if you like. Share and remember.
