There are rumors floating through South Dakota political circles that Matt McGovern may take on John Thune and his $5.5 million war chest. McGovern is a true progressive (the grandson of Sen. George McGovern) and is currently the state director for Repower America. He has been going all around the state talking about clean energy and climate change. McGovern is an attorney who worked on the Obama for America campaign as the state director for South Dakota. He also worked on the Billion for Governor campaign in South Dakota back in 2006.
Over the last week both of the major papers in the state have floated rumors that McGovern is considering taking on Thune in 2010 (http://www.argusleader.com/... and http://rapidcityjournal.com/... and http://rapidcityjournal.com/...). CQ Politics (http://www.cqpolitics.com/...) and the National Journal (subscription req.) have also run pieces recently.
McGovern is the type of candidate that the progressive movement can and should get behind. More importantly, he would take on John Thune and make him tap into his war chest. Obviously, it would be a long shot but someone has to take on Thune and let him know that South Dakotans do not agree with his far right positions.
So what do people think? Would the grassroots get behind McGovern and help him out? I know South Dakota can sure use him.
