Purity cults have been around for a long time.  They all imagine some perfect world, now lost to enemies within society. They seldom enlist more than 5-10% of the body politic, but they tend to be very noisy. We can think of the French Poujadists,  Haider's Austrians,Bavaria's National Socialists or those Georgians who still light votive candles before icons of Stalin.  The enormous if brief success of the Know Nothings, who wanted to purify us from the Irish pollution here in the 1840s is a good native example.

So, in brief, the Teabaggers would save us from pollution and put us back on the path to REAL AMERICANISM. While this means deporting all those Mexicans, more importantly it means neutralizing or destroying the liberal influence.  Any purity cult conservative know that liberals are not real Americans.  In fact they are traitors who want to overthrow the Founders in the interests of international order and replace free enterprise with government control.  Liberals, quite simply, are not REAL AMERICANS.
I'm posting this to try and capture the sincere quality of teabag beliefs

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The problem with the teabaggers will be that they strike fear in any Republican who is not one of them. As a result, any of the handful of moderate Republicans will expect a primary challenge and any other Republican who might hear the siren song of sanity will be forced to participate in filibusters as a way to stay on the good side of the teabaggers.

We Democrats might cheer them on since they will provide candidates who are un electable. But I believe the net effect will be a more intransigent opposition party leading to further paralysis.

I have never been able to figure out if Fox is the propaganda arm of the Republican party or is the Republican Party the political subsidiary of Fox.

are streaming away from the Republican Party leaving only the cultists behind.  We are observing the Death of the GOP, which is wonderous thing, as the Atwater strategy has polarized the country and the center is prevailing.  Fortunately the right wing nut cases are few.  Unfortunately they are extremely dangerous.
