I have noticed that a lot of people on the left want Obama to pull United States troops out of Afghanistan. If you want that to happen, then what you should be wishing for is the capture and then execution of Osama bin Laden. The attack that he launched is what got us into Afghanistan in the first place. Although we helped overthrow the Taliban, we didn't get bin Laden.
Bin Laden helped kill over 3000 Americans. He helped plan the attack and helped finance the attack. His continued existence on the planet is one thing that prevents Obama from pulling troops out of Afghanistan. Imagine the outcry from the organized right if he pulled out of Afghanistan with bin Laden still on the loose.
Sure, our side could point out the hypocrisy of the wing-nuts complaining about bin Laden being alive after Bubble-boy Bush had eight years to get him and couldn't do it. Sure, we could point out that it was the Bush administration and not the Obama administration that lost the chance to capture him when he was almost surrounded at Tora Bora. To the wingnuts and their allies in the media, (and there are a lot of them), all that wouldn't matter. What would matter is the fact that they could build a narrative around Obama's allowing bin Laden to remain free.
If he could be captured and then executed, or killed and proof that he was dead be produced, then it would be a lot easier for Obama to leave Afghanistan. At that point he would have done one thing that Bush wasn't able to do, and it would then give him the excuse to get out of Afghanistan.
Indeed, if he linked getting out of Afghanistan to the capture of bin Laden, there might be a lot of Afghans who would gladly tell us where in Pakistan he is presently hiding, just to get us out of their country.
