Last Friday, my junior girl scout troop went to the NC Capitol Building in Raleigh, where they met Governor Bev Perdue in front of the George Washington Statue in the Rotunda. Governor Perdue spoke a few minutes with the girls before they continued on their tour. Go below to fold to see what she said and what the girls did for the rest of the day.
Governor Perdue talked about how she had been a girl scout growing up and that when she decided to get into politics she was told she wouldn't get any where. She said that didn't stop her from studying hard and working hard and eventually she became successful. She had all the girls in our troop promise to go on to college, ("graduating high school is a given, right? You are all going to do that!"). She continued, "and after you get through college, I want as many of you as possible to go on to graduate school, ok?" They don't call her the "Education Governor" for nothing!
After a tour of the building and a tour of the Governor's Mansion, the girls returned to a room in the capitol building where they worked on making mock campaign posters and each gave a speech about what was important to them and what they would do if elected. Off the top of my head, some of the "issues" that were important to the girls were the price of gas, homelessness, reduction in smoking and drinking among adults around kids, and ecology. Some of the things they "promised to do" if elected were lower gas prices, give deep discounts on plane trips, provide for free education, end homelessness and hunger, and stop euthanizing shelter animals.
At the end of the day the girls received a "Lead On" badge and also a "Women in the White House" patch.
