A psychiatrist ? I am outraged.
OK. I've never written a diary here at Daily Kos before, I just lurk a whole lot. (It may be rude, but it keeps me thinking).
First of all, I want to say that I am deeply saddened by what has happened at Fort Hood. I cannot imagine the horror that family and friends must be going through right now. It is beyond my imagining.
I have a need to really make a point, though. ANYBODY can be "nuts". People who are Muslim can be nuts. Psychiatrists can be nuts. I work in the mental health field, I am not talking about mental illness. I am talking about really screwed up people that can go off in very dangerous ways.
I was married to a psychiatrist for fifteen years. A year after I left him, he decided that he needed to take revenge. He came into my home with a claw hammer and beat me on the head. Succinctly said on a review site of medical doctors http://www.vimo.com/... :
"Devries attack to kill his wife and daughters was premeditated. His idea of religion did not allow for his then wife to divorce him as that would be adultrey, thus he was justified in killing her. His attack failed as his then wife, after being hit with the hammer, fell on him and pinned his arm down. The children called the police. The police felt he intended to kill his children as well based on what they found in his auto. To his current wife, watch out, he will try to kill you one day."
You can read through that site, if you want. He (calling himself "Scott") and his wife have both posted there. HE IS CURRENTLY PRACTICING IN THE FIELD OF PSYCHIATRY.
My point is, we ought to be considering the damage incurred by the very people that are venerated as helping professionals. Major Hasan has killed and caused damage. I am horrified that a psychiatrist can commit a violent felony and go on to serve a prison term and return to his practice.
Whew. Thank you for listening. I started a blog a few weeks ago: http://riskingsurvival.wordpress.com/ because I know I need to start talking more. We ought to know who the good guys are when it comes to professionals in the field of mental health.
***I appreciate all of your comments. After reading media reports this morning about investigations into Hanan's Muslim beliefs, I thought that the conversation could better be spent asking about how such a man can serve to guide others in the field of mental health. Thank you for doing that.
