I don't mean "right" as in correct. I mean "right" as in wingnut. By voting against this bill, Dennis Kucinich has traversed a kind of political worm-hole and popped out the other end siding with Republicans on what may be the most important vote of his career.
I know we can do better. A single payer system would have been better. A more robust public option would have been better. Avoiding an extreme amendment trampling all over women's right would have been better. But at some point, you either make hard compromises or you get nothing done. In 2008, we the voters asked for change, not the status quo. And yesterday Dennis Kucinich voted for the status quo.
Some have speculated how he would have felt if his were the deciding vote in defeating this legislation. I think he would have enjoyed that, not because of his lofty principles, but because I think he likes attention and boy would he have gotten a lot of attention in that case.
Well, it didn't work out that way. Instead, the Democrats passed historic reform legislation and the principled representative from Ohio...voted with the Republicans. Thanks for the help, Dennis.
