When will we ever learn? The real reason single payer was taken off the table, abortion. I consider myself to be anti-abortion, pro-choice. Seems irrational to those that can't quite grasp the concept of contraception.
It is with great sadness that American women are yet again told that the equal rights amendment is just a bunch of hollow words. Until women are seen as quite capable of making those life affirming decisions, we will always be second class.
Life affirming?!? How can you say that?!? Abortion is baby death!!!!
Well, so is miscarriage but we haven't found a way to stop that either.
Well actually we did, in the 1950s women were given DES, diethylstilbestrol, it turns out that the aftermath of that great "advancement in medicine" has given rise to fertility medicine. While it was meant to prevent miscarriage, it actually sterilized male children and impeded the reproductive capabilities of female children. Of course as with all things, we found this out after the fact. I myself am not a DES baby, but have two sisters who were afflicted. One of whom lost her life in her pursuit of a family through fertility medicine. That is another story for another time.
It is through age appropriate education and understanding of our reproductive responsibilities that we will be able to overcome the stigma of abortion. Making it safe, available and infrequent should be our goal.
Our new mantra should be: Educate, educate, educate.
Knowledge is power.
