The froth that has been churned up over Stupak (McJoan, for instance, called it the "Coathanger Amendment") is beyond absurd. Imagine if we could go back and time and talk to a pro-abortion rights activist circa 1972. "I have good news and bad news to report. The good news is that in 2009 abortion is a protected constitutional right in all fifty states. The bad news is that the universal health care bill we're about to pass won't pay for it, so about half of all American women (who don't have it covered through work) would have to come up with the approximately $400 cost themselves, in the 2% chance any of them have to have an abortion in any given year during their reproductive lifetimes."
I mean, seriously: some people need to get a grip here and try to see the larger picture. Even leaving aside all the controversial aspects of abortion (and FTR, I am a supporter of "safe, legal, and rare" abortion rights), many medical issues can be financially ruinous and throw families into bankruptcy. Abortion is not one of those issues.
