THE WARNING ABOVE was contained in every issue of Air Intelligence Digest -- published by the U.S. Air Force's Department of Intelligence.
First published in 1948, the Digest played the key role in keeping thousands of Air Force intelligence officers -- located at every base across the globe -- cohesively updated on the myriad of complex air intelligence issues facing the U.S. at a time when the Cold War was not only white hot, but had also erupted into a fierce and savage face-to-face confrontation on the Korean Peninsula, leaving only carnage in its wake.
Naturally, much of its focus was on the Soviet Union. More time still was spent on inside looks at U.S. aerial technological developments -- particularly the guided missile and orbital rocketry programs. But in August, 1952, it turned over its monthly issue to one topic in particular.
That issue might have been called -- in less perilous times -- the beginner's guide to flying saucers.
The diary is being transferred to its new home at Saturday Night Uforia and will be posted Saturday, January 21, 2012.
