    and eaten while still alive.. I think I can handle the usual Thanksgiving fare.

    One of my friends went vegetarian because of Thanksgiving 3 years ago. He just gave it up like 6 weeks ago and has since been eating pork, beef whatever. Today we'll sit down for Thanksgiving again I wonder if he'll stay with meat eating.

      deal with it by trying to avoid meat that looks like an animal -yes i know i am a coward, trying my best to buy humanely raised meat..etc. plus i hate veggies..ugh.

      I also talk to my butchers about how animals are slaughtered etc. One of the great things done by an autistic woman, Temple Gradin, was to develop many more humane ways to deal with cattle especially at the slaughter house.

      Temple attributes her success as a humane livestock facility designer to her ability to recall detail, which is a characteristic of her visual memory. Grandin compares her memory to full-length movies in her head that can be replayed at will, allowing her to notice small details that would otherwise be overlooked. She is also able to view her memories using slightly different contexts by changing the positions of the lighting and shadows. Her insight into the minds of cattle has taught her to value the changes in details to which animals are particularly sensitive, and to use her visualization skills to design thoughtful and humane animal-handling equipment. She was named a fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in 2009.[7]

      I will never forget seeing her years ago on a 60 minutes or something and realizing how great it was that an autistic person took much of what she felt/knew about external noises/changes and helped keep animals calm.

      I eat bacon but keep away from pork a lot bc they are the 3rd most intelligent animal and it bothers me.

      Bottom line, vegetarian might be ideal for me..hell i feed the mouse behind my stove so the cats don't get it, while trying to save chipmunks they bring in :D but it isn't.  carniverous and will stay that way but try to be responsible with it.

      A great article on the front page mdiday thread is about a turkey farmer..i cried and i understood all at once

  I'm going to grill my turkey on the Webber and accompany it with Maoist red beets, communist Kos-orange carrots, fresh socialist arugula.  I'm having blacker-the-berry-the-sweeter-the-juice blueberries and boisenberries for dessert.  The only thing white at my thanksgiving table (other than my lovely wife of sixteen years) will be the Cakebread Chardonnay.

•  The difference in turkeys

  is striking. Look at the first Truman picture, on the WH lawn (with the maid in full starched regalia!!!)--the turkey is lean, like a wild turkey today.

  Compare that to the turkeys of more recent pictures, after poultry raising had become part of the chemical-industrial food industry. Today's birds are stuffed in more ways than one--with hormones, chemicals, antibiotics, et cetera and so forth.

  And for anyone who's gluten-sensitive, be aware that turkey breast, so-called, is very often injected with wheat gluten during "production" to make it plumper. But it won't show on any labeling.

      veeeeeerrrry carefully. There are all manner of weasel-words used to cover up questionable ingredients. Some good web sites out there with info re celiac and gluten, though.

          is sometimes code for MSG. And it's in every damn thing you can think of.

          I've tried calling companies to ask what's really in the stuff, and they won't tell you. They say it's part of the trademark or some such nonsense. So I say if they won't tell me, I won't buy their products. Then they offer to send me free coupons for more of their potentially toxic stuff.

          With ham, it's best if you can get it from a local farmer. Factory-farmed ham is fed things you don't even want to think about.

          Watch out for things like Vanilla, unless it specifically says it's organic.

  any of the 400+ Federal prisoners serving sentences exceeding 15 years for marijuana.

  Kudos, however, to Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, who today released medical marijuana patient Will Foster, originally sentenced to 93 years for growing a closet full of plants back in the 1990s.
