Every so often, I’ll post some music videos, usually on Sunday morning. So here’s some music you can listen to (and watch) as you read the more serious DKos diaries.
In honor of yesterday’s historic vote in the House, I’ve selected songs that relate somehow to doctors, illness, hospitals, or healthcare. I know some of them are depressing or dark. But they’re still good songs.
If you have your own favorites or other suggestions, mention them in the comments (or include a link). Hope you enjoy them.
Peggy Lee – Fever
Let’s begin with a classic song by Peggy Lee.
Humble Pie – I Don’t Need No Doctor
Hey kids, wanna hear what we listened to in the old days – back in the ‘70s? It sounded something like this...
The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma
"Girlfriend in a coma. I know I know it’s serious." Kind of depressing (like many Smiths songs), but it’s a pretty song. And this video has old footage of the silent movie star Louise Brooks. I don’t know why. Brooks died of a heart attack at the age of 78.
Mudhoney – Touch Me I’m Sick
Being from Seattle, I had to throw in a grunge song or two. If you’ve seen the movie "Singles," they featured a version of this song called "Touch Me I’m Dick."
Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box
More grunge. "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black." A dark song, but I like it a lot.
Johnny Cash – Hurt
One of Johnny Cash’s last songs. Originally a Nine Inch Nails song.
Amanda Palmer – Oasis
Here’s a bizarre video that might disturb some people. At first listen, it sounds like an upbeat song with a happy pop melody, but it’s about a woman who goes to a party, gets raped, and has an abortion. But she’s happy because she got an autographed picture of the band Oasis in the mail.
Cab Calloway – St. James Infirmary Blues (with Betty Boop)
Let’s finish with a classic old song with a classic old hallucinatory black and white cartoon:
