Senate roll call: Vote on women's health
By The Associated Press (AP)
The 61-39 roll call Thursday by which the Senate adopted an amendment to safeguard coverage of mammograms and preventive screening tests for women under a revamped health care system.
A "yes" vote is a vote to adopt the amendment.
Voting yes were 56 Democrats, 3 Republicans and 2 independents.
Voting no were 2 Democrats and 37 Republicans.
After a couple of weeks of accusing the Democrats of working to kill women by recommending that women between 40 and 50 did not always need mammograms and saying this was done just to save costs, Republicans all but unanimously voted to kill an amendment establishing the right to such screening in any health care reform. Just another case of using any excuse to bash democrats and health care reform but when it comes down to action they would rather vote against women's concerns than to provide anything but a no vote to protect the Health Insurance companies.
The Democrats listed as voting No were Nelson and Feingold. Nelson we understand but Feingold? Was this a Kucinich-like purity vote or an AP gaffe? I hope it was the latter because one of the (R)s listed as Yes votes was Vitter. Yikes! We all know how much he likes women but that's a step outside his usual comfort zone. The other (R)s were Collins and Snowe.
