I'm always fascinated by world elections. I believe that if other countries are continually democratically electing populist leaders that don't "toe the line" to US foreign policy and business interests, then we will have a lot harder of a time "spreading democracy" tyranny. If there is any world leader to be happy about, it is Evo Morales.
Evo Morales is the country's fist indiginous leader. Think of that for a second. He was poor, and still got to be elected president. Unheard of over here. He ran on a platform of getting more power to the people. Before he came into office, the country was going through a serious crisis when defense contractor (and world destroyer) Bechtel tried to privatize the country's water supply. Water rates went up for the poor, and so the people of Bolivia revolted, driving Bechtel out of their country, and electing Evo Morales, who ran on a platform of nationalizing parts of the Bolivian economy, and giving the money back to the people. This proved popular (that's why he's a "populist" because his ideas are "popular") and he's been a thorn in the side of the corporate class ever since he was elected. Today's re-election reconfirms the way the political winds in Latin America are blowing, away from corporate power, and more towards people power.
Bolivian President Evo Morales has been re-elected for a second term after a securing a convincing victory in Sunday's polls, exit polls suggest.
They suggest Bolivia's first indigenous leader polled at least 61% of the vote, defeating his conservative rivals.
Mr Morales told crowds at his final campaign rally: "There are two roads: continue with change or return to the past."
also, the social democratic candidate of Romania is positioned to win
