I sympathize with many Gay Americans who feel disappointed at the direction Barack Obama is taking on the issues of Gay rights. To me, it strikes me as classic Clinton Centrism which is basically a poison that's killing the Democratic party, but that's the issue I'm going to address.
However, while it was also to see the city of Houston elect it's first openly gay mayor, it doesn't quite compared with the breaking news coming out of Mexico City.
According to the huffington post, Mexico City lawmakers became the first Latin America city to legalize Same-Sex marriage.
Besides legalizing Same-Sex marriage the bill, which was also approved by a 39-20 margin includes the following:
The bill calls for changing the definition of marriage in the city's civil code. Marriage is currently defined as the union of a man and a woman. The new definition will be "the free uniting of two people."
The change would allow same-sex couples to adopt children, apply for bank loans together, inherit wealth and be included in the insurance policies of their spouse, rights they were denied under civil unions allowed in the city.
For me this is a complete shock.
As a individual of Mexican/Peruvian descent, I'm quite aware of how homosexuality is viewed. A friend of mine, who is quite the misoygnist, freely uses the word fag as if it's the only word avaliable in his vocabulary. I'm also very aware that Mexico is a deeply, deeply, deeply, religious country. Predominantly Roman Catholic. And I know many in that nation are none too pleased. That is especially why I'm so surprised by this development. But then again, for those who feel slighted by the President's current direction, I say don't give up hope. If a openly gay person can be elected Mayor in a city deep in red state country and if Mexico City can legalize gay marriage, then really there should be hope for better days to come for many Gay Americans.
