This is my first Diary Entry. The subject is on the late Ann Nixon Cooper. Perhaps I can offer some form of insight to the threads that this site is known for. At the very least, I should be able to provide comedic relief:-)

It's always amazing to see how the effect of one person can so dramatically change or alter the life of another.
I've been in a relationship for around 5 years with this stunning yet eccentric theater artist. She comes from a hugely diverse ethnic, professional and philosophical family. We've been through a lot together. The death and sickness of parents, children growing up, birthday's, career changes, and desires for the future. One important element of my partner's lineage is that she, along with her twin sister, are adopted. I will add that the twins, along with their younger brother, are all bi-racial. Not that it matters one iota to them. They were raised by a tremendously generous black couple in Grand Rapids Michigan. I have always been impressed by the way the family sticks together and builds history.
On the night of President Obama's speech everyone was emotional because it was obviously a seminal moment in American history but also in World and Black history. Things would never be the same again. Myself, an african american father (also a twin) would not see my sons go through the same social upbringing. Improvement, no matter how slow, is a good thing. So imagine my surprise as during the speech Obama mentions the name of Ann Nixon Cooper. My lady starts crying uncontrollably. Of course I was very concerned because her reaction was so visceral within the context of what was happening.
I hugged her and asked what was the matter. The woman that President Obama had just mentioned was the Aunt of my lady, The Aunt of her Father, the Aunt of her Daughter. Known simply as AUNT ANN. Aunt Ann passed away last night at the young age of 108. May we all live as long and full.
Legacy and Surprise indeed.
