This guy may be the real deal here in North Carolina.
Here is some of his entry on Huffington Post:
I just made one of the most important decisions of my life. Today, I announced that I am entering the race to challenge Richard Burr for the U.S. Senate seat from North Carolina.
I didn't get to this point easily. We have so many strong Democrats and voters eager for change in North Carolina, but I know we're still going to have a rough battle against Burr. My wife Elizabeth and I felt like we couldn't shy away from tough fight -- not if it meant a chance to do better for my children, my friends, and the state I loved.
Don't know if a lot of people are interested yet in seeing candidates for 2010, but here in North Carolina I think is shaping up to be one humdinger of a fight. Cal seems to be the real deal and if he can make it through a tough primary against the likes of Elaine Marshall, then the "lawnmowerman" Burr better watch his gr"ass".......

He believes it will take around 8.5 million to beat Burr based on what Kay Hagan raised in her election.
prospectus from News and Observer
In that cycle, Hagan raised and spent $8.5 million—$1.4 million in primary spending and $7.1 million in general election campaign spending. Cunningham anticipates spending $1.5 million to communicate in the primary campaign and another $7 million for the general election.
Cunningham entered the race with the full support of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the encouragement of the White House and numerous current and former Democratic elected officials in North Carolina. The DSCC and the White House have expressed commitment to dedicate resources to this campaign.
