There is no question that organizing a 2012 primary challenge against Obama will be an difficult undertaking, but it is absolutely necessary, and will drastically increase the likelihood of either getting a decent progressive presidential candidate for our party in 2012, or else in pushing Obama back into the Democratic fold, which he has all but left at this point.
We can't leave it until after the inevitable rout in the 2010 midterms. By that point it will be too late to build any momentum for a progressive challenger against the enormous advantages of incumbency.
The only question is, who should it be? Alan Grayson would seem to be a good choice. Does he have any interest in running? Maybe Chuck Schumer or Andrew Cuomo wouldn't be too bad either. Whoever it is, it should be someone identified with support for progressive health reform, and opposition to the escalation in Afghanistan.
And please, haters, spare me your negativity. This primary challenge IS the legacy of the Hope and Change whose mantle Obama falsely claimed in the 2008 election. So please spare us the bullshit about how Obama is the best we could possibly hope for, and how dare we betray him by questioning his greatness, yada yada yada.
Folding our hands and having faith in Obama will "do the right thing", in spite of all evidence to the contrary, will not lead to an improvement in our situation. A strong primary challenge will. If you're really against the idea, I've left a poll where you can register your opinion.
Oh but sorry, I haven't included any cutesy "pie" option to vote for in the poll, because given the magnitude and seriousness of the issues facing our country, the "pie" thing is the stupidest shit ever.
