Diaries on the rec list are fighting over whether or not Obama broke the law. I realize this is an issue on which people here have strong opinions.
But it is also true that Obama definitely is breaking the law, and over a far more serious issue. The US has signed a treaty making it mandatory to prosecute torture. Despite extremely strong evidence that torture has taken place, Obama is not even starting an investigation. On the contrary, his lawyers are doing everything they can (doing everything they can(Update 1) to prevent OLC memos with incriminating information from seeing the light of day.
One could go so far as to say that Obama is now complicit in torture, if perhaps not quite legally yet then certainly morally.
As an aside, there is a story on the main page right now explaining how the Treasury is trying to work around the law newly passed by Congress. Before anyone says that this is the Treasury and not Obama - does anyone doubt that the president could stop this immediately if he wanted to? Where is Obama condemning this kind of behavior from his Treasury department?
Are laws there to be worked around or ignored if they are inconvenient? What about international treaties?
