My boss is a VIP in the field of pediatric cardiology/cardiac imaging/adult congenital heart disease/research into any combination thereof. One of the more recent results of this was he was made an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. His duties include finding people to review manuscripts that are sent to the journal for possible publication. The following email just arrived from the Managing Editor.
I have some acquaintance with the system now, and can guarantee that the original email was strictly boilerplate, sent automatically by a computer with no clue.
Please take note and try not to assign anyone from the Oschner Clinic to review a paper for us for the foreseeable future.
Dr. Milani actually took the time to write us this note below to apologize for not getting to a review. We will withdraw him and find someone else.
Best,
Managing Editor, JACC

Subject: Re: JACC080805-2941, Review Overdue - First Notice
I'm from New Orleans and have lost my house and my hospital is not fully operational. We have been caring for the patients from the disaster and have not been able to complete the review.
I don't know how long this will take, so perhaps you should re-assign this review.
I apologize for any inconvenience.
