There was no appearance on the Sunday TV shows, no appearance in the Sunday or Monday Washington Post or New York Times. It's been 10 days now? When do we realize that the majors just
aren't going to go after this? The upper-level management decisions have been made, the fix is in. Anyone who doesn't yet understand that BushCo are
brilliant strategists is always going to be behind the fight. "Rathergate" served its purpose perfectly. It was never only about CBS, or obfuscating Bush's dis-service in the National Guard - it was also about intimidating the media into quivering terror over the notion of printing
anything at all that hasn't been approved. Every reporter and newspaper and station in America knows that BushCo has three more years to fuck with them if they attempt to act all investigative and curious - it's simple self-preservation on their part to avoid "Gay White House Sex Scandal" like the plague. Hell, you can go to jail for revealing your sources, and you can go to jail for
not revealing your sources. It's no wonder Hunter S. Thompson hung it up, the Beast has won.
Based on recent history, "Gannongate" won't even get started. Look at the stories that
did hit the mainstream, and how they've been reconstructed. The Iran/Contra scandal - Reagan is an American Hero. The CIA/Contra/crack cocaine story - reporter Gary Webb is a liar and a lunatic; WMD - Bush lied, oops, so what? Social Security needs to be reformed, fine, just don't bother me. Americans at this point are collectively still too fat, happy and lulled into a sense of complacency by their hypno-box to even give a flying fuck. Where are the street protests? Where are the students? Who's going to win "Survivor?" And "American Idol?"
I hate to say this, but the only hope I see is that reality in the form of great economic pain for a large number of Americans will eventually overwhelm the BushCo "self-constructed reality." At some point, the Mideast and the economy will all come crashing down - no band-aids can help us now. I am certain that BushCo already has plans in place to turn Americans against each other to deflect blame from the rich. Do not underestimate their strength as strategists. How well has making fun of Bush worked for you so far? We've got a lot more important things to worry about than Rove's love life.
The best I can do is to compile and organize information so that people who seek it can make sense of what has happened to them. There is going to be tremendous anger among young people who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter when they realize that the car that daddy bought them in high school is the only new car they'll ever own, that even if they get a degree they'll be working at Wal-Mart the rest of their lives, mummy and daddy grew up in a world of manicures and Bahama vacations but they'll be spending every penny they ever earn on food and shelter. I'm afraid that these children don't have the cognitive skills to reason out the real causes; teaching thinking has certainly not been a priority of the educational system the last few decades, but what else can we do but accumulate facts? We certainly can't hope to place these facts into the corporate media - oooh, keep dreaming. Until enough jobs shut down, until enough people die from lack of health care, and until the electricity shuts off so that Junior can't play his Nintendo, the anger is just not there.
