Not a dream for the future like MLK but a dream while I was sleeping.
I was on a river boat. It was a party river boat with an open bar, which is strange because I never seem to be where an open bar is. We were all sitting around in those cheap white deck chairs at little tables. The tables where piling up with disposable plastic cups. A waitress took her arm and swept the cups into the river.
No one said anything.
I started freaking out at her. "You can't do that! Are you insane?"
"I am tired of picking up these cups. This is easier." She said.
I jumped off the boat which was near the shore. Then I woke up.
First of all, it was an interesting dream to me because it was not typical. It showed me how this community has seeped into my brain and is not letting go.
Secondly, the waitress had a point. Doing the wrong thing is often easier. Doing the right thing is often more difficult.
Maybe this is why the progressive fight is so challenging. We are asking people to do more. We are asking people to care about more than themselves. We are asking them to care less about money and more about our society as a whole.
No wonder the Republicans have so many mindless followers. We are asking people to think.
We need to frame the Democratic Party as the party that is morally right. Not because it will win elections, but because it is true. Being morally right is not easy but it is worth the fight. We need to get back to what JFK said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
