What I learned last year:
Give the Democrats a mandate to govern, the Presidency, a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and a large majority in the House and they will:
- Generously bail-out banks, without imposing any regulation that could prevent them from taking the same actions that required us to bail them out in the first place.
- Concoct a monstrous Health-Care proposal that enriches the people responsible for the problem, without actually forcing them to make any significant changes which could benefit me, or the country.
- Insure that I have no options available to me which would allow me to escape the clutches of greedy bastards.
- Back down from every fight and capitulate to every obstruction.
In essence, the Democratic Party taught me that the only reason to work, contribute, or turn out to elect Democrats is if there is the real possibility that they might lose the majority completely, thus handing things over to the completely insane, rather than the spinelessly indifferent.
Lesson learned.
Good luck in 2010, guys.
You shouldn't have that pesky filibuster-proof majority to worry about anymore.
